If you're looking for the perfect weekend getaway from Sydney, it doesn't get much better than Mudgee and Orange. These two beautiful regions in Central West NSW are home to award-winning wineries, luxury accommodation, incredible local produce and some of the best dining experiences we've had in New South Wales.
What I loved most about this trip was the slower pace of travel. Days were spent enjoying long lunches overlooking vineyards, relaxing in outdoor bathtubs with countryside views and discovering cosy cafes and hidden gems around town.
This 5 day Mudgee and Orange itinerary is based entirely on our own experience and includes all of our favourite places to eat, stay and explore.
Best Time to Visit Mudgee and Orange
In my opinion, the best time to visit Mudgee and Orange is during autumn. The countryside absolutely comes alive with colour and you'll see stunning shades of orange, red and yellow throughout the towns and surrounding vineyards. It really is beautiful at this time of year, so if you can, I'd recommend planning your trip for around mid April when the autumn colours are usually at their best.
That being said, Mudgee and Orange are also perfect winter or spring destinations. Cosy luxury stays, open fireplaces, hearty food and incredible local wines make it an ideal cold weather escape.

How Long to Spend in Mudgee and Orange
Orange and Mudgee are both around a 3.5 hour drive from Sydney, making them perfect for a weekend getaway. If you're only planning a short trip, I'd recommend focusing on just one region. Mudgee is about a two hour drive from Orange, so if you want to experience both destinations properly, I think five days is the perfect amount of time.
Spending two nights in each region gives you enough time to enjoy the beautiful countryside, discover some of the best local food and wine, and actually slow down and unwind.

The Ultimate 5 Day Mudgee and Orange Itinerary
Mudgee
Day 1: Long Lunches and Luxury Glamping
Start your Central West NSW road trip with one of the best dining experiences in Mudgee. Head to The Zin House for lunch, where you'll enjoy an incredible set menu overlooking the vineyards. The restaurant grows many of its own ingredients on the property, so everything tastes incredibly fresh and seasonal. Every dish we tried was amazing and the peaceful setting makes the whole experience feel really special. After lunch, spend some time wandering around the grounds with a glass of wine and soaking up the beautiful countryside views.

For your accommodation, I can't recommend Sierra Escape enough. This stay was on our bucket list for years and it was absolutely worth the wait. The luxury glamping tents overlook rolling countryside hills and feature an outdoor bathtub, outdoor fireplace, BBQ and kitchenette, making it the perfect place to unwind after the drive.

We picked up a few things in town for dinner and spent the evening enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The outdoor bathtub at sunset was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. Watching the sun disappear behind the hills while everything turned golden was such a special experience.
Day 2: Wellness, Chocolate and Local Favourites
Start the day with breakfast at Althea by Zin, which quickly became one of our favourite bakeries in Mudgee. Everything here looks incredible, making it almost impossible to choose. They have a huge selection of sweet and savoury pastries, pies and cakes, but the cheesecake was definitely a standout for us.

Next, it's time to slow down with a wellness experience at Jila Wellness, located inside The Clairfield Hotel. The space is beautiful and calming, and you'll feel relaxed the moment you walk through the doors. They offer infrared sauna sessions and float therapy, and since it was our first time trying a float, we weren't quite sure what to expect. Floating in magnesium rich water and feeling completely weightless was such a unique experience and one of the most relaxing parts of the trip.
Afterwards, head back into town for lunch and spend some time wandering around the local shops. We stopped at The Butcher Shop Cafe, which was delicious.

A short five minute drive from town will take you to Spencer Cocoa, one of the hidden gems in Mudgee. The owners, Luke and Thea, are incredibly passionate about chocolate, and hearing their story while learning about the chocolate making process was so insightful. Of course, the best part was tasting the chocolate itself, which was on a completely different level to anything you'd find in the supermarket.
Finish the day with dinner at Mudgee Brewing Co.
Day 3: The Pagoda Walking Track and Gigi's

Start your morning with breakfast at another local favourite, Alby & Esther's. Hidden away down a laneway, this rustic cafe sits within a charming cobblestone courtyard covered by a beautiful grapevine canopy. It was especially pretty during autumn and felt like one of those places you could happily sit for hours. They're particularly well known for their jaffles, which are hard to beat on a cold country morning.
Before heading out, grab some snacks and supplies in town and then make your way to Wollemi National Park to tackle the Pagoda Walking Track. The walk starts from the Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp Campground area and is a short but beautiful hike with some rock scrambling towards the end.

We were honestly surprised by how incredible this place was. The unique rock formations rising above the winding river, with mountain views stretching into the distance, make it feel unlike anywhere else we've visited in NSW.
The first section follows a relatively flat path before reaching the base of the pagodas. From there, the track becomes less obvious and you'll need to carefully make your way across the rocky formations. Take your time and be mindful near the edges as there are no barriers. Allow around an hour for the return walk, plus some extra time to relax and take photos at the top.
After a day of exploring, finish with dinner at Gigi's. The restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere and the food was amazing. The honey drizzled gnocchi was easily my favourite dish.
Orange
Day 4: Boutique Shopping and a Luxury Stay
Check out of your accommodation in Mudgee and enjoy the scenic two hour drive to Orange. One of the best places to eat in Orange is the Union Bank Hotel, so this is the perfect first stop. Like so many places in the region, the food was incredible, but the croquettes were an absolute standout.
After lunch, spend some time exploring the shops around town. Two of our favourites were Jumbled for colourful homewares and Dirty Janes for vintage treasures.

For accommodation, we stayed at Basalt Orange and honestly couldn't recommend it enough. This beautiful luxury property features three architecturally designed villas overlooking a cherry orchard and the surrounding countryside. Every detail has been carefully thought out and the outdoor fireplace makes it the perfect place to slow down and relax.
We ordered a pre-prepared dinner with a bottle of local wine and spent the evening enjoying a quiet date night in the villa, making the most of the cosy atmosphere and fireplace.
Day 5: The Best Food and Wineries in Orange
We enjoyed breakfast at Basalt Orange, where a continental breakfast was provided in the villa. If you're staying elsewhere, I'd recommend heading into town and grabbing pastries from Racine Bakery.
Today is all about experiencing some of the best wineries and food that Orange has to offer.
Printhie Wines

Printhie Wines was one of our favourite experiences of the trip. We enjoyed a sparkling wine tasting paired with oysters overlooking the beautiful vineyard. You can also book a degustation lunch where local produce is carefully curated into a four course dining experience.
Heifer Station Wines

For a slower afternoon, head to Heifer Station Wines. The cosy cellar door, beautiful vineyards and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely place to unwind. We decided to do a private picnic out in the vineyards and enjoyed a delicious hamper with wine by the fire. They also have friendly farm animals roaming around the property, which adds to the charm.
Hey Rosey
If you're looking for somewhere for pre-dinner drinks, Hey Rosey is a great little wine bar in town. The cosy atmosphere, vinyl music and excellent selection of wines, cocktails and share plates make it an easy place to spend a few hours.
Fiorini's
For dinner, head to Fiorini's for one of the best Italian dining experiences in Orange. Set in what feels like someone's home in the countryside, the restaurant focuses on handmade pastas and authentic Italian flavours. We visited on a weekend and it was extremely busy, so I'd definitely recommend booking ahead.
