Albany, Western Australia, is a hidden gem that many travellers pass on when heading down the south coast. It's one of our favourite places, boasting insane crystal clear water, fine white sand and incredible coastal views. Albany is home to some of the best beaches in Western Australia so be sure not to miss it. We've put together a list of the best beaches in Albany to add to your itinerary.
What is the best month to visit Albany?
The best months to visit Albany are November to April, when the weather is warm and ideal for enjoying its stunning beaches. The summer months are your best chance for clear skies and calm waters. It can get very cold and windy down south in the winter so we would suggest avoiding the months surrounding winter.
How many days do you need in Albany, WA?
We recommend spending at least 3-4 days in Albany to be able to explore all of their best beaches. This will give you enough time to check out Little Beach in Two Peoples Bay as well as the most popular beaches in Albany near Torndirrup National Park.
10 Best Beaches In Albany You Must Visit
1. Little Beach, Two Peoples Bay
Little Beach is the most iconic beach in Albany and also one of the best. It's known for turquoise waters, soft white sand, and picture perfect views. One of our favourite things about this beach are the two unique granite boulders along the waters edge. They capture perfectly with a drone at sunrise and our photo from here is still one of our favourites today. Whether you’re soaking up the sun, swimming, or just taking in the views, Little Beach is a must-visit. If you keep walking to the end, there is a hidden pathway that will take you to another secluded spot called Waterfall Beach.
Why visit:
-
Perfect photo opportunity
-
Ideal for swimming and snorkelling
-
Quiet and secluded atmosphere
Tip: Arrive early to enjoy the views without the crowds
2. Misery Beach
Despite its name, Misery Beach is nothing short of paradise. This small, secluded beach is surrounded by massive granite cliffs and offers a peaceful spot to relax. Misery Beach is one of the best beaches in Albany to escape the winds and swell as the large cliffs offer protection. It’s also often less crowded than other popular spots, making it the perfect spot to enjoy away from the crowds
Why visit:
-
Incredible backdrop
-
Peaceful and less crowded
-
Perfect for photography and relaxation
Tip: Visit during sunrise or sunset for magical golden-hour lighting.
3. Frenchman Bay Beach
Frenchman Bay is often overlooked when visiting Albany, but it quickly became one of our favourite beaches. It's the perfect spot to pull up in your campervan and park alongside the foreshore. You'll be treated with unbeatable waterfront views right at your doorstep. The bay is also incredibly protected from wind and large waves, making it the ideal place to have lunch and go for a swim.Â
Why visit:
-
Perfect place for lunch with a view
-
Waterfront views
-
Ideal calm waters for swimming
Tip: Head further along the beach to get away from the seaweed which can often be floating around.
4. Whalers Beach
The far end of Frenchman Bay is known as Whalers Beach and is a quick walk along the beach from the carpark area. There are also hidden stairs leading down to Whalers Beach, which is accessible from St Georges Crescent. Whalers Beach is often less crowded than Frenchman Bay and typically a lot more pristine. The turquoise water here is untouched and the views overlooking the bay and islands in the distance are picture perfect. In our opinion, Whalers Beach is up there as one of the best beaches in Albany.
Tip: The big boulder has a rope you can use to climb up to snap a few photos from a unique angle
5. Fishermans Beach
Fishermans Beach is another hidden gem that we accidentally stumbled upon. Its accessed from the start of the Point Possession Heritage Trail carpark. From the carpark you can choose between two equally beautiful beaches. Efelo Beach is the slightly larger beach compared to the sheltered Fishermans Beach. Both are stunning and were definitely the quietest beaches in Albany.
Why visit:
-
Great for fishing
-
Calm waters ideal for swimming
-
Stunning coastal views
6. Goode Beach, North
Goode Beach is a large stretch of pristine sand and clear water. There are plenty of access points but our absolute favourite is the north beach access just off Mistaken Island. This particular spot reminded us of our backpacking days through the islands of Southeast Asia. When the tide is low, you can almost walk out to the nearby islands. We also noticed a few diving boats around Mistaken Island, so we'd imagine that there would be good snorkelling opportunities.Â
Why visit:
-
Unique island views
-
Dog friendly
-
Quiet and less crowded
Tip: Bring a snorkel and mask to check out the marine life around the islands.
7. Emu Point
Emu Point is the perfect family friendly beach that is close to town. The calm, shallow water makes it the ideal place for a relaxing swim. Additionally, the nearby cafes and picnic areas make it easy to spend the whole day here
Tip: Be sure to pack a picnic and enjoy a meal with ocean views.
8. Middleton Beach
Middleton Beach is Albany's main beach, being so close to the town centre. Its long stretch of white sand is perfect for morning walks, beach games, or exercising your dog. The nearby boardwalk and various lookouts are perfect if you want to try your luck at spotting whales during the migration season (June to October)
9. East Bay Beach & Campground
Saving one of the best beaches in Albany for last. East Bay Beach is quite far from Albany, but the 45 minute drive is worth it. The reason we love this beach so much is that you can camp by the beach for FREE. East Bay campground is a rare find as free beach camps are hard to come by these days. You'll have squeaky white sand and the clearest turquoise water right at your front door. Nothing beats waking up to the sound of the ocean and going for a morning swim to start the day.
Why visit:
-
Free beach camping
-
Dog friendly
-
Amazing panoramic viewsÂ
Tip: Be sure to get there early (before 4pm) if you plan of staying as spots fill up quickly
10. Shelley Beach
For those a little more adventurous, Shelley Beach and campground is the perfect spot. Although the road in can be quite rough and corrugated, you'll be rewarded with beachfront camping views. Being in a national park, dogs are not allowed, although you will have untouched pristine views of the natural landscape. Camping amongst the green hills as a backdrop with the beach at your doorstep is sure to be an unforgettable experience.Â
Tip: It's $17 for a national park pass which you can pay at the station before entering. Additional camping fees apply (currently $15 pp)
