Best Stops On A Sydney To Byron Bay Road Trip

Port Stephens

Just a few hours north of Sydney, Port Stephens is the perfect place to start your East Coast road trip. There are so many incredible things to do in Port Stephens that you could easily spend a few days here.

The Mount Tomaree Head Summit Walk is best done at sunrise or sunset for the amazing panoramic views overlooking both the bay and the mountains over the ocean. The 2.2km return track will take you up a steep climb but nothing too challenging. Shoal Bay is the crown jewel of this region and it's easy to see why. Crystal clear water and views of the mountain peaks in the distance give Shoal Bay a tropical island vibe. The water in the bay is calm and protected, making it the go to spot for a swim on a hot day.

Fingal Bay Beach is another stunning beach in Port Stephens with amazing views. A unique feature of this beach is the Fingal Spit. During certain tides, there is a sand bank that links the mainland to Fingal Island. During this time you'll be able to walk across the sand bank surrounded by the ocean on either side and explore the island. Please take caution and check the tides so you give yourself enough time to cross the spit as the ocean can get very rough. Lastly, be sure to check out Anna Bay at sunset. You'll be able to watch the camels in the distance as they walk around the sand dunes along the beach.

Seal Rocks

This sleepy seaside village is an absolute gem and one of the most underrated stops on a Sydney to Byron Bay road trip. Famous for its crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches, Seal Rocks is the perfect place to unwind. Don’t miss Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, where you might spot whales during migration season.

Another great lookout and place to park for the day if you're doing van life is at the top of Boat Beach. There are a few parking bays that look over the beach and a large grassy area perfect for having picnic.

Ellenborough Falls

Ellenborough is a big detour off the main highway from Sydney to Byron Bay, but if you get the chance, we definitely recommend adding this stop to the itinerary. The waterfall is one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls in NSW and the Southern Hemisphere. The viewing platform near the top offers stunning panoramic views, while the walking track to the base lets you experience the sheer power of the cascading water up close. The lush rainforest surroundings make it a perfect spot for a picnic or a short nature walk. There is also a large grassy area for free camping as you turn off the main road.

Crescent Head

One of our all time favourite stops along this coastline is at Crescent Head. It's a small and cute coastal town with only a few shops. Barnetts Bakery is always the first thing we do when arriving into Crescent Head. They have a large selection of delicious baked goods and donuts which are to die for.

Crescent head is well-known for it's surf culture and long right-hand break off Killick Beach. It's typically a slow wave so you'll find plenty of surfers of all skill levels, primarily on longboards. Even if you’re not into surfing, the scenic headland walk and nearby creek inlet for swimming make it well worth a stop.

Hat Head

Hat Head is a hidden treasure with beautiful coastal scenery. The Hat Head National Park is perfect for bushwalking, fishing, and spotting wildlife. The nearby crystal clear creek is also ideal for swimming in protected calm waters. If you love secluded beaches and incredible viewpoints, this is a great stop to add to your itinerary.

South West Rocks

South West Rocks is a great stop to add to your Sydney to Byron Bay road trip. It's another coastal town with plenty of things to do in the area. We spent the day at Back Creek Bridge, which is one of the most popular places to swim. There's a bridge that many people jump off into the crystal clear creek below. Trial Bay Goal and the beach in front is another popular spot, as well as the stunning beaches in Arakoon National Park.

Scotts Head

Scotts Head is another favourite stop of ours and a little gem that many travellers miss on their way to Byron Bay from Sydney. It has a similar vibe to Crescent Head, but it's an even smaller surf town. There are two trendy cafes and a caravan park in the area, perfect for a night or two. Scotts Head lookout is also the perfect place to check the morning surf or watch the sunrise over the headland.

Nambucca Heads

With its vibrant blue water and endless beaches, Nambucca Heads is one of the most picturesque stops on a Sydney to Byron Bay road trip. The shifting tides of the river inlet create a beautiful blend of colours and you'll often see dolphins swimming up the channel. Another main attraction is the famous V-Wall, full of colourful murals from travellers and locals. South West Rocks has so many pristine beaches that you'll be spoilt for choice.

Bellingen

If there's one stop you can't miss on a road trip from Sydney to Byron Bay, it would be Bellingen. This cute country town is a short detour inland off the coastal highway, but is definitely worth checking out. The town itself has many trendy vintage shops and cafes that serve incredible food. We had the burgers from Coastal Harvest and WOW, they were some of the best on the trip.

One of the biggest reasons people come to Bellingen is to check out the surrounding waterfalls and rainforest. One of the most iconic areas is the Never Never Creek, specifically the Promised Lands. Promised Land road is a loop road so you can take your time driving around Never Never Creek and check out the stops that interest you most. We'd recommend turning right onto Promised Land Road first which is the quickest way to access the stunning creek. Just over the small wooden bridge you'll see a gravel area for parking. There are plenty of little tracks to wander along to find your own spot to swim along the creek.

Dorrigo National Park

Dorrigo National Park is one of the most scenic stops on the itinerary. It's roughly another 30 minutes inland from Bellingen. There are some great free camping options in the area but one of the main attractions is Dangar Falls. It's a great place to cool off in the warmer weather. One of the best parts of this waterfall is that it is dog friendly! There's nothing better than enjoying nature and a swim with your little furry friend. In the region there are plenty of other hikes and lookouts amongst the rainforest.

Yamba

Yamba is a laid-back surf town that’s often compared to Byron Bay before it became super popular. With uncrowded beaches and great cafes, it’s the perfect place to slow down. One of our favourite beaches was Pippi Beach. A large stretch of sand with enough room for you to enjoy an uncrowded day at the beach. The southern end of Pippi Beach is also dog friendly which was a bonus. For some amazing ocean views, you can head to the famous Pacific Hotel and treat yourself to a sunset drink.

Byron Bay

Finally, you’ll arrive at Byron Bay, the ultimate destination on your East Coast road trip. Famous for its beaches, surf culture, and vibrant lifestyle, Byron has something for everyone.

Some of our favourite things to do in Byron Bay was checking out the idyllic beaches. The pass is one of the most popular and for good reason. The water clarity is unreal and there is a set of stairs to a lookout on a small island surrounded by tropical water. You'll often find plenty of surfers here as the waves are long and slow, making it perfect for all levels. Our favourite dog beach is Belongil and is where we spent most of our days. It's the perfect place to set up for the day to have a surf and relax with your pup. Wategos beach is another little slice of paradise you simply cannot miss. While you're in Byron, also be sure to check out the lighthouse for some amazing views

As for food, our go to cafe's are Combi Byron Bay and Bayleaf. Both places have delicious brekky options, tasty smoothies and coffee. For some incredible wood-fired pizzas and live music, make your way to Treehouse Byron Bay. It's a boho style restaurant and bar in a tropical setting.
